Your PS5 used to be quiet. Now the fan sounds like a hair dryer ten minutes into a match, the air coming out the back is hot, and maybe you already saw the message telling you the console is too hot and needs to cool down. Some simply shut off mid-game. At our Kendall shop this is one of the most common console problems we hear about, right next to HDMI ports. Here is how to tell what is going on, what you can safely do at home and what to expect from a repair.
This guide covers the warning signs, quick checks, the mistakes that make it worse and how a console overheating repair works at our Miami shop. The same ideas apply to an Xbox Series X or S that runs hot.
Signs your PS5 is overheating
- The fan is loud all the time, not only in heavy games. A healthy PS5 gets louder under load and calms down in menus. If it roars on the home screen, airflow is restricted.
- Very hot air from the back vents or a top panel that feels hot to the touch after a short session.
- The “too hot” warning on screen, asking you to turn off the console and let it cool down.
- Random shutdowns or freezes during gameplay, often in the same demanding games, with the light turning off or the console beeping.
- Grinding, rattling or clicking from the fan. That points to dust buildup, debris or a fan that is starting to fail.
Why it happens in Miami
The PS5 pulls a lot of air through the console to keep its processor cool. Over months, that air brings in dust, lint and pet hair. It collects on the fan blades and packs into the heatsink fins. Once the fins are blocked, the fan has to spin faster and louder to move the same heat, and eventually it cannot keep up.
Miami adds a few extras. Apartments and houses that shut off the AC while everyone is at work, consoles inside closed TV cabinets, and the humidity that makes dust stick to surfaces all speed up the buildup. A console that sits on carpet or right against a wall has an even harder time breathing.
Dust is the most common cause, but it is not the only one. The PS5 uses liquid metal between the processor and the heatsink instead of regular thermal paste. If that layer moves or was disturbed by a bad repair, the processor runs much hotter than it should. A worn-out fan can also cause the same symptoms.
What to do right away
- Turn it off and let it cool. If you saw the warning or the console shut down, do not restart it right away. Unplug it and give it some time.
- Give it space. Move it out of closed cabinets and away from walls. Sony recommends leaving at least about 4 inches (10 cm) of free space around the console. Keep it off carpet and away from sunny windows.
- Clean the outside vents. With the console unplugged, use a soft brush or a vacuum on low held near the vents (not touching) to pull surface dust from the front and back intakes.
- Clean the dust catchers if you are comfortable. On the original PS5 you can remove the side covers and vacuum the two dust catcher holes. This only clears loose surface dust. It does not reach the heatsink fins inside.
- Update first. If only one game crashes, update the system software and the game before blaming the hardware.
- Watch the pattern. If it still gets very loud or shuts off after these steps, the dust is packed inside or the problem is internal. That is the moment to have it checked.
Things that make it worse
- Blasting canned air straight into the vents. It can spin the fan past its normal speed and push dust deeper into the heatsink.
- Opening the console further than the side covers without experience. The liquid metal layer is conductive. If it spills onto nearby parts, it can short the board. This is one job we strongly recommend leaving to a technician.
- Placing it on a bed, a rug or inside a closed shelf to hide it. It will overheat faster.
- Ignoring the warning for weeks. Repeated heat stress is hard on the board.
Overheating or a power problem?
These two can look similar. A console that overheats usually turns on normally, runs for a while and then gets loud or shuts down under load. A console that will not turn on at all, turns off right away or shows a blinking light without starting is more likely a power supply or board fault. In that case our PlayStation power repair page explains what we check. If your PS5 runs fine but there is no picture on the TV, read our guide on PS5 no signal and HDMI port repair.
What an overheating repair involves
At the bench we open the console, remove the fan and clean it properly, then clear the dust that is packed into the heatsink fins, where home cleaning cannot reach. We check that the fan spins smoothly. When the cooling layer needs it, we replace the liquid metal correctly, which takes care and the right technique. The covers are cleaned too before the console goes back together.
After the repair we test the console under load so it can run a demanding game without the fan screaming or the console shutting off. If we find something else during the diagnosis, like a damaged fan or a power issue, we tell you before doing any extra work.
What to expect at our shop
- Free diagnosis. We find out if it is dust, the liquid metal, the fan or something else, so you only pay for what the console actually needs.
- The price before the repair. You know the cost and approve it before we start.
- Same-day repair when parts are in stock. If a part has to be ordered, we tell you up front.
- Walk-ins welcome. No appointment needed. You can also message us on WhatsApp first with your model and what the console is doing.
- Board-level work in-house. If heat has already damaged something on the board, we handle diagnosis and microsoldering in our workshop.
