Your Xbox makes the startup sound, the power light is on, the controller connects, but the TV just says No Signal. Or the picture flickers, cuts out for a second and comes back, or only works when you push the cable a certain way. At our Kendall shop, HDMI problems are the most common console repair people call and text us about, and Xbox Series X, Series S and Xbox One consoles come in with the same symptoms as PlayStations. Here is how to tell whether it is the cable, the TV, a setting or the HDMI port itself, and what a repair looks like.

This guide covers the signs, the checks you can do at home in a few minutes, what not to do and how an Xbox HDMI port repair works at our Miami shop.

Signs the problem is the HDMI port

  • The console is clearly on, but no picture. You hear the startup sound, the Xbox button lights up and the controller pairs, yet every TV and every cable shows No Signal.
  • The picture cuts in and out. The screen goes black for a second, sound drops, then it comes back. Moving the cable makes it better or worse.
  • The cable feels loose. The plug wiggles, sits crooked or will not click in all the way.
  • Visible damage. Shine a flashlight into the port. Bent or missing pins, a cracked plastic tongue or a port that sits lower than it should are clear signs.
  • It started after a drop or a pull. Someone tripped on the cable, the console fell off the stand, or it was moved while plugged in. That is the most common story we hear.

Checks you can do at home first

  1. Try a different HDMI cable. Cables fail more often than people think, especially ones that get bent behind a TV stand. Use the cable that came with the console if you still have it.
  2. Try another TV input or another TV. Switch to a different HDMI input and make sure the TV is set to that input. If you can, test on a second TV or monitor.
  3. Xbox One owners: check which port you are using. The Xbox One and One S/X have two HDMI ports on the back. Only HDMI OUT goes to the TV. HDMI IN is for a cable box. Plugging into the wrong one gives you a black screen.
  4. Do a full restart. Hold the Xbox button on the front of the console for about 10 seconds until it turns off, unplug the power cord for a minute, plug it back in and turn it on.
  5. Reset the video settings. A resolution or refresh-rate setting your TV does not support can look exactly like a broken port. On consoles with a disc drive, you can start the console in low-resolution mode: with the console off, hold the Xbox button and the Eject button until you hear a second beep. Microsoft’s support site has the steps for each model.
  6. Remove anything in between. Plug the Xbox directly into the TV, not through a soundbar, receiver, capture card or HDMI switch, to rule those out.

If you get a picture on another TV or with another cable, the console is probably fine. If nothing works on any TV, with any cable, and the console is clearly on, the problem is almost always the port or the video circuit behind it.

What not to do

  • Do not force the cable in. If the plug does not go in straight, pushing harder can bend the pins further or break the port off the board.
  • Do not keep wiggling it to get a picture. Holding the cable at an angle might work for a day, but every move stresses the solder joints and can turn a simple port job into board damage.
  • Do not try to straighten pins with a needle or knife. The pins are tiny and close together. It is easy to short them or snap one.
  • Do not order a port and open it yourself unless you have microsoldering experience. The port is soldered to the main board with many small connections, and overheating the board can damage nearby parts.

What an Xbox HDMI port repair involves

At the bench we open the console and inspect the port and the board around it under a microscope. If the port is damaged, we remove it, clean the pads and solder a new port in place with microsoldering tools. Then we check the small parts and the video chip near the port, because a hard hit or a power surge can damage those too. Sometimes the port looks fine and the fault is in that video circuit instead, which is why we test before quoting.

After the repair we connect the console to a TV and run a game to make sure the picture is stable, the sound works and the cable sits tight. If the console also runs hot or the fan is loud, we can look at that during the same visit. You can see every console service we offer on our game console repair in Miami page.

What to expect at our shop

  • Free diagnosis. We confirm whether it is the port, the video circuit, the cable or a setting before you spend anything.
  • The price before the repair. You know the cost and approve it before we start any work.
  • Timing depends on parts and the day’s queue. Many console repairs are finished the same day, but some go to the next day depending on parts in the shop and how many repairs are ahead of yours. Come in as early as you can for the best chance of same-day.
  • Walk-ins welcome. No appointment needed. Bring the console and its power cord. You can also message us on WhatsApp first with your model (Series X, Series S or Xbox One) and a photo of the port.
  • Board-level work in-house. Diagnosis and microsoldering happen in our own workshop.
