You set your phone on the table and it rocks like a seesaw. Or you notice a gap between the screen and the frame, the back glass looks curved, or a strange pressure mark shows up on the display. In most cases, that is a swollen battery pushing from the inside. It is one of the problems we take most seriously at the shop, because a swollen lithium-ion battery is not only a repair issue, it is a safety issue. Here is how to recognize it, what to do right away and what to expect from a battery replacement in Miami.
This guide covers iPhone and Samsung Galaxy phones, with a note on iPads and MacBooks, and explains how a phone battery replacement works at WEGOWEFIX in Kendall.
Signs your phone battery is swelling
- The screen is lifting or separating from the frame. You may see a gap along one edge, or the display may look slightly raised.
- The phone no longer sits flat. It wobbles on a table, or the back glass looks bowed outward.
- The back glass cracked without a drop. Pressure from inside can crack the glass on a phone that was never dropped.
- Touch problems or a pressure spot on the display. A battery pushing on the back of the screen can cause ghost touch, a bright or dark spot, or lines.
- Buttons feel different. The side or volume buttons may feel stiff or stop clicking.
- The phone runs hot, drains fast or shuts off. These often come before or along with swelling. If those are your only symptoms and nothing is lifting, read our guide on how to tell if it is the battery or the charging port.
Why batteries swell, especially in Miami
Phone batteries are lithium-ion cells. As they age, and especially when they get hot, the chemistry inside breaks down and can produce gas. That gas has nowhere to go, so the battery puffs up like a small pillow and pushes against the screen or the back glass. The most common causes are:
- Heat. A phone left on the dashboard or in a closed car in the Miami sun, used as a GPS in a windshield mount all afternoon, or charging under a pillow.
- Age. An older battery that has gone through many charge cycles is more likely to swell.
- Cheap or damaged chargers and cables. Uncertified chargers can deliver unstable power to the battery.
- Physical damage. A hard drop or a bent phone can damage the cell itself.
What to do right away
- Stop charging the phone. Unplug it and do not leave it on a charger, especially overnight or on your bed.
- Back up your data if the phone still works. On an iPhone use iCloud or a computer. On a Galaxy use Samsung Cloud, your Google account or Smart Switch. Do it quickly, with the phone off the charger.
- Take the case off. A tight case adds pressure on a swollen battery.
- Turn it off and keep it somewhere cool. Away from direct sun, the car and anything flammable.
- Bring it in soon. A swollen battery does not go back to normal, and it usually gets worse.
What not to do
- Do not press the screen back into place. Squeezing a swollen battery can damage it further and, in rare cases, make it catch fire.
- Do not poke, puncture or try to open it yourself. A punctured lithium battery can overheat very quickly.
- Do not put it in the freezer or try other tricks from social media. Cold does not fix a swollen cell.
- Do not hold the screen down with glue, tape or a tighter case and keep using the phone as if nothing happened.
- Do not travel with it. Damaged lithium batteries are not allowed on flights, so get it replaced before your trip.
Will the screen or back glass need to be replaced too?
Not always. In many cases, once the swollen battery is removed and a new one is installed, the screen sits back where it belongs and works normally. But if the battery pushed hard enough to crack the back glass, bend the frame or damage the display, those parts may also need attention. That is why we check the whole phone during the diagnosis and tell you exactly what needs to be replaced before we start. If the display took the damage, see our iPhone screen repair page, and for cracked glass on the back, our guide on cracked iPhone back glass.
What a battery replacement looks like
The technician opens the phone carefully, without putting pressure on the swollen cell, removes the old battery and its adhesive, installs a new battery with fresh adhesive and closes the phone. Then we test charging, the screen, touch and the buttons before you pick it up.
- On iPhones, some newer models can show a message about the battery part after a replacement. The phone and the new battery still work, and we explain what you will see on your model before the repair. More details on our iPhone battery replacement page.
- On Samsung Galaxy phones, the battery usually sits under the back glass, which is removed and resealed. See our Samsung battery replacement page.
- Your data stays on the phone. We do not need to erase it to replace the battery.
- Do not throw a swollen battery in the household trash. Lithium batteries need proper disposal, which is one more reason to let a shop handle it.
iPads and MacBooks swell too
The same thing happens on tablets and laptops. On an iPad, the screen starts to lift from one corner. On a MacBook, the trackpad stops clicking, feels raised, or the bottom case no longer sits flat on the desk. Treat it the same way: stop charging, back up and bring it in.
